Form V visit Places of Worship

Form V visited two places of worship in preparation for researching and creating their own RS projects.

We started at the Oxford Jewish Centre in Jericho where we were greeted by Danni Czaczkes, a lady who volunteered her time to talk to us. She spoke of Judaism as a culture as well as a religion. We learnt that Sabbath traditions can vary in each household but that it is the most important festival for all Jews. We were shown the stunning Torah scrolls and prayer shawls and Danni talked to us about the significance of Bar and Bat Mitzvah. We were shown the kitchens where kosher food is prepared and learnt that Oxford provides a place of worship for Jewish people from quite a wide area.

We journeyed on to Leamington Gurdwara where we ate our lunch in the vast Langar Hall. The dining hall and kitchen provide many meals every week for visitors. We were lucky enough to sample some of the delicious food. Our host here was Myjinder Singh Braich, a local business man who also volunteers his time to talk to school groups. He told us stories of all 10 Gurus and we witnessed a lady reading formally from the Guru Granth Sahib.

Myjinder spoke of Sikh’s being students seeking knowledge about God and about the Sikh belief in one Universal God. We visited 2 different worship halls and were given a taste of the holy food Pershad.

This was an informative and interesting trip that has provided an initial stimulus for the children to work independently on their chosen areas of study.
