Leadership Roles

Encouraging leadership and responsibility is an integral part of life at Ashfold. Through a range of opportunities, pupils learn to support their peers, take initiative, and develop confidence—valuable skills that will serve them well beyond their time at school.

Pupils have many chances to contribute to school life, with roles of responsibility available across different areas of the school community.

Prefects & School Leadership

All of Form 5 can apply to be Prefects in their final year. Working in House teams, they assist with school routines, support younger pupils, and serve as an important link between children and staff. The Head Boy and Head Girl are appointed by the Headmaster.

Captains & Head Choristers

Leadership opportunities extend across many areas, including:

  • House Captains – Appointed from Form 6  to lead their House and set a positive example.
  • Form Captains – Each pupil in Forms 1 – 4 has the chance to take on this role, assisting with class and school routines.
  • Sports Captains – Shared between pupils in Forms 1 – 6 to encourage participation and teamwork.
  • Head & Deputy Head Choristers – Appointed from Forms 5 & 6 to support the Director of Music in leading the Choir.

School Council

The School Council, chaired by the Head Boy and Head Girl, provides a platform for pupils in Forms 1 – 5 to represent their peers and contribute ideas for school improvement. Each Form elects a new representative each term.

Developing Leadership Skills Beyond the Classroom

After Common Entrance examinations, Form 6 pupils take part in an enriching three-week Post-CE Programme, designed to broaden their experiences, develop independence, and prepare them for their next steps beyond Ashfold.

This programme includes a Dragon’s Den-style challenge, where pupils work in teams to plan, develop, and pitch a business idea with the aim of raising money for charity. They learn valuable entrepreneurial skills, including problem-solving, financial planning, teamwork, and presentation techniques, all while supporting a meaningful cause.

The highlight of the programme is a week-long outward-bound expedition in the Brecon Beacons, where pupils face physical and mental challenges in a spectacular natural setting. Working in teams, they take part in hiking, navigation, survival skills, and campcraft, with each child leading their group for a day. This experience helps them develop resilience, teamwork, decision-making, and leadership skills, ensuring they leave Ashfold with the confidence to take on new challenges.
