Scholars' Club on War Gaming in WWII
Historian and OA, Paul Strong, returned to Ashfold to share his latest research on how war-gaming helped the British Navy defeat the Wolf Packs of German U-Boats in World War II.
Paul described how the German submarines were endangering Britain's vital supplies of food and oil during the war and how the Western Approaches Unit in Liverpool trained up many young women and men to think like their undersea adversaries. They then would act out various scenarios with Naval officers and develop tactics which would eventually help win the Battle of Atlantic and keep this country warm and fed! A virtually unknown story of brilliant thinking and co-operation wonderfully told - as ever - by Paul.
Next year Paul will return to tell scholars how they will be living and working with Artificial Intelligence.
