Transition Trip to Buckinghamshire Railway Centre

Children in Transition went back in time on a trip to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in Quainton

On three days in September 1939, 1.5 million children were evacuated from London and other major cities, to the countryside.

On Wednesday 19 September 2018, children in Transition wore the kind of clothes and the labels the evacuees might have worn, they took train rides and carried their gas masks all day, just as the WWII evacuees did.

They learned about what they would have been allowed to take with them and were astounded by how small the suitcases were. They were also surprised to hear that boys could take so many handkerchiefs.

The day also included a visit to a bomb shelter where an air raid was staged, accompanied by a recording from November 1940 of all the sounds of the real Blitz in Coventry. The Transition children were very brave and some even wanted to repeat the experience. Thomas said:

"We heard the air raid siren and ran into the carriage. We heard guns and bombers, it was really cool."
