Road Safety Week
This week we marked Road Safety Week at school with a series of initiatives designed to raise awareness of road safety and promote life-saving messages.
We welcomed a Road Safety Constable from Thames Valley Roads Policing Unit and three Police Community Support Officers from Amersham and Waddesdon Police Stations who talked to the children about different aspects of road safety.
Pre-Prep children learned about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike and how wearing a seat belt in the car saves lives. They also learnt how to cross a Puffin Crossing safely.
Afterwards, everyone admired the Officers’ road safety vehicles, complete with sirens and flashing lights – great fun!
Junior and Senior children learned how to cross the road independently and safely using the Green Cross Code:
1. Find a safe place to cross
2. Stand a few inches back from the edge of the kerb
3. Stop, Look, Listen and wait until it is safe to cross
4. Walk in a straight line across the road, keep looking left and right
They also learned how helmets protect our brains through an experiment using an egg wearing a cycling helmet!
The children were shown two films including ‘The School Run’ where the children had to identify the mistakes parents and children were making. The lessons we learned from the film are:
- Safety belts save lives
- Drivers on mobile phones and car kits cause accidents because they are distracted and not fully in control of the vehicle
- Speed limits are important for keeping pedestrians safe
- Children under 130 cm or under the age of 12 need a booster seat and must not ride in the front.
Our thanks to Thames Valley Police for their visit and for reminding us all about these important messages.
Staff and children have also discussed road safety during Tutor time this week and the children have been invited to create a design for a road safety sign to be installed on the school drive.
