Transition on the Home Front
Earlier this term, children in Transition enjoyed a visit by Mrs Downie (Director of Studies, Mr Downie’s mother) who talked to them about her experiences as an evacuee during World War II. She also spoke about rationing and the joy of eating special treats like bananas, which were in extremely short supply during the War.
Following Mrs Downie’s visit, the children looked up wartime recipes and discovered that ingredients that were plentiful (like potatoes) were often substituted for ingredients that were in short supply (like eggs). During a session in the Cookery Room, they made Chocolate Pin Wheels according to an original wartime recipe.
